In christianity it symbolizes the fall of Lucifer after he ascended himselfabove God and was cast down from heaven and locked up in what the Bible calls hell.
Luke 10:18 And he said unto them, I saw Lucifer fall from heaven as lightning.

Or when man got a physical body and it is something that they are working to regain as well as Christianity to come back to the source god again. With the difference that they believe that they can get to heaven by being enlightened and that only those they choose are so more worthy to enter their knowledge.
